Everyone should know basic first aid and CPR.\u00a0 However, you probably shouldn\u2019t attempt first aid techniques if you\u2019ve never actually been trained on how to do them properly.\u00a0 If you make a mistake, you could accidentally make a person\u2019s injuries even worse!\u00a0 There are a variety of options for taking a certified, safe first aid course.<\/p>\n
The Red Cross commonly offers several different courses, and there is probably at least\u00a0first aid and a CPR course available in your area.\u00a0 You could also check with your local hospital or fire department.\u00a0 Why take\u00a0first aid and CPR?\u00a0 Because someone you know, sometime in your life, will probably hurt themselves, maybe even seriously, and you should be able to help!\u00a0 You may even save someone\u2019s life.<\/p>\n
Neat Trick:\u00a0 One \u2018tool of the trade\u2019 you may learn about in a basic first aid course is a technique to determine whether a splint is\u00a0too tight: you give a toenail or fingernail of the splinted limb a little squeeze.\u00a0 If the pink\/red color (which is blood flowing back to the area) comes back quickly, that means you are probably getting enough blood flow in that area.\u00a0 If the color stays white or light pink and doesn\u2019t darken again, then blood isn\u2019t flowing as quickly as it should, and you may need to loosen the ties on the splint, in order to prevent even more damage to the wounded area.\u00a0 But remember, this book is not a first aid course and I\u2019m not a doctor \u2013 go take a real course with your local Red Cross!<\/p>\n
