{"id":376,"date":"2011-10-17T22:54:08","date_gmt":"2011-10-18T05:54:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/preparedblog.com\/?p=376"},"modified":"2011-10-17T22:54:08","modified_gmt":"2011-10-18T05:54:08","slug":"every-day-carry-brass-button-compass","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.andrewbaze.com\/wparchives\/everyday-carry\/every-day-carry-brass-button-compass\/","title":{"rendered":"Every-day Carry Brass Button Compass"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mceTemp\">Can you point to the north?\u00a0 I would guess that it\u2019s OK if you don\u2019t know, because as you read this, you are probably at home or somewhere else familiar and it doesn\u2019t really matter.\u00a0 However, when you figure out what you need to have with you as part of your every-day carry (EDC), you might want to consider a compass, especially if:<\/div>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>You are new to your area<\/li>\n<li>You travel frequently<\/li>\n<li>You often get lost &#8211; it&#8217;s OK to admit it \ud83d\ude42<\/li>\n<li>You like to go hiking or camping<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But will it be a hassle to carry a compass around with you all the time?\u00a0 Not if it\u2019s a tiny, brass compass like the kind you can buy at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tripleaughtdesign.com\/\">Triple Aught Design <\/a>(TAD Gear).\u00a0 It\u2019s <strong>smaller than a dime<\/strong> in diameter, and quite rugged. Here\u2019s what it looks like.\u00a0 And if you want to save a few bucks, and are OK with black instead of green, you can get the same one for $36 at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bestglide.com\">www.bestglide.com<\/a> (at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bestglide.com\/FB1605_Info.html\">this link<\/a>). \u00a0The compass is known as the Pyser compass, or\u00a0a NATO survival compass, and it has its origins in World War II, when it was issued to pilots.<\/p>\n<p>You might also want a compass like this if you have a very small survival kit.\u00a0 While there are other small compasses close to this size, at far lower price, I\u2019m not aware of any decent-quality compass that\u2019s this small.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t need the smallest, you can save a few bucks and get <a title=\"Compass\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000FEWA9A\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=wwwpreparedb-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=217145&amp;creative=399369&amp;creativeASIN=B000FEWA9A\" target=\"_blank\">a high-quality, slightly larger compass like this<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Below\u00a0is what mine looks like after several months of every-day carry.\u00a0 You can see that some of the custom green paint has worn away, because I\u2019ve carried it in the change pocket of my jeans, with\u2026 change.\u00a0 The constant abrasion of metal coins has worn the\u00a0green paint around the edge, but the compass still works as it\u2019s supposed to, and I\u2019m not worried about it not looking quite as pretty as it once did.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_381\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-381\" style=\"width: 264px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.andrewbaze.com\/wparchives\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Compass1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-381\" title=\"EDC Compass\" src=\"http:\/\/www.andrewbaze.com\/wparchives\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Compass1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"264\" height=\"231\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-381\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">NATO Brass Button EDC Compass<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Since the compass is incredibly small and light, I don\u2019t notice that I&#8217;m carrying it, but since I spent ~$40 on it (TAD gear is not inexpensive!), I have been careful about not leaving it in my pocket on laundry day.\u00a0 So far so good.<\/p>\n<p>You won\u2019t want to use this compass\u00a0as your main compass\u00a0in an <a title=\"Orienteering\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Orienteering\" target=\"_blank\">orienteering<\/a> course. \u00a0You will want something that provides more detail, like this much larger, <a title=\"Silva Compass\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Silva-2801077-Ranger-CL-Compass\/dp\/B000VSA6NC\/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1318807085&amp;sr=8-5\" target=\"_blank\">very good Silva model<\/a>.\u00a0 But if you are turned around in a new town, or just reached a fork in the trail and aren&#8217;t quite sure if you&#8217;re taking the correct direction, and need to double-check and get your bearings, and only have whatever is in your pocket, this tiny compass will do the trick!<\/p>\n<p>Last and (admittedly) probably least, this little compass is just plain cool.
